I too changed to a spin on filter, but mine came from AH spares, and I thin=
k I have a different WIX number.
When I had the original system, I found it much easier to take the whole as=
sembly off the side of the block, change the filter on the bench, and then =
reinstall with a new gasket. I remember Rich Chrysler saying he did it that=
way too. A lot less mess.

I got one of Moss=92s first =93spin on=94 adapters in the late =9180s becau=
se of the mess caused by the original canister, and the need to special-ord=
er the replacement cartridges. This adapter holds the spin-on filter paral=
lel to the centerline of the car, with the aft end of the filter lower than=
the front. Changing oil is easy and causes no mess. I don=92t know if th=
is type of adapter is still available, but the one I have is the only one I=
=92ve ever seen. All the others hold the filter perpendicular and level to=
the block and seem to be sized for a smaller filter than what I use.
I have several Wix 51085 filters, and all except one (China) are marked =93=
Made in USA=94. I remember back in the =9160s that I used to pass the Wix =
plant in Gastonia, NC about once a week.

I use K&N 2009's which fasten to the engine laterally and wish I could find=
a spin-on adaptor that has the filter facing (open-end) up simply because =
it is much easier to avoid a mess.

As a corollary to this topic, a question=85..

If one has two filters identical in all respects except size, would the big=
ger of the two be better? ie, does size matter?

I only ask because I have latterly been using large filters, Mann W1130/1. =

Impossible with the original Lucas starter.

Any ideas?

Don,

It makes absolutely no difference where the filter is made unless the manuf=
acturer specifies different material in its manufacturing process. Absolute=
ly every step of the fabrication is automated and made by robots except the=
step of lining up the bottom part of the filter and I doubt an American c=
an drop it in place any better than a Chinese. See a video on YouTube how F=
ram filters are made.

Given the relatively low price of an oil filter, I would still change the f=
ilter every oil change.
