Asbestos is not a great insulator as people might think. Once it heats up,
it stays hot. The shields can be restored it they are in good shape. They
can be painted with a high temperature white paint that is available at auto
parts stores. Asbestos is a danger only if it is friable (emitting dust).
Painting the heat shields encapsulates the asbestos. This is a common
remedial method that is used in construction when asbestos is found and not
abated.

I did not know that it was no longer available. It was made from some form
of cement board. I'm sure it is not as effective as the original asbestos
sheets.

Eric Grunden of Absolutely British worked with Moss to design their heat
shield replacement kit, which uses cement board. I used their kit when I
last had my engine out a couple of years ago and found it to be a good
quality reproduction that fit well.

Any suggestions on the best material to make a carburetor heat shield. I
won't re-use the original asbestos part for obvious reasons. The metal part
