I cut a "V" shape into a piece of cardboard and slip the cardboard under
the needle so the needle is at the point of the V. This will protect the
gauge face. Then take a kitchen fork and slip the tines under the needle
center and lift up. If it doesn't come up just by lifting, you can gently
lever against the gauge face.
