Gary, the pull in coil is nominally 0.5 ohms and the hold coil is 12 ohms.
At 12 volts, the pull-in coil should draw 24 amps and the hold coil 1 amp.
The pull-in coil normally operates for only a brief time, so I have used a
20A fuse in the circuit for several years without a problem. Actually, I
believe it did blow once, but a replacement did not. Transient spike, I
assume.
50A seems a bit high to me, too.

Subject: [Healeys] OD Solenoid
I cannot find the current draw of the OD Solenoid, can someone help me? I am
interested in both the holding circuit draw & the pull-in circuit draw. Norm
Knock's Tech Talk book recommends fusing the OD circuit at 50 amps which
seems very high, but what do I know?
