Richard, the process is called hard anodising. One uses either sulphuric
acid or chromic acid and applies a direct current with the object as anode.
An oxide layer is formed - with hard anodising the thickness is between 25
and 50 micron. A red blood cell is approx. 8 micron in diameter, a strand of
human hair approx 100 micron. Therefore you better don't hone an anodised
cylinder!
