You both make good points. It may be mostly a visual thing since there is
arc in the bonnet. I will install and close it carefully with a glob of clay
on top of the carb to measure the clearance. It's also probable that I
tightened the motor mounts with the engine supported and locked in the
highest position possible. Thick motor mounts is another possibility that I
had thought about. I've got a couple of old sets that I can compare when I
get my hands on the car.
