Ned,
Mike's technique works well. Another approach is to hold the
distance piece in place on the accumulator housing and gently apply
air pressure (with a rubber-tipped blower) down the operating
valve, removing the cap, plunger, spring, and ball first. This will pop
the housing and piston out together. Make sure to put new O-ring(s)
on the housing when reassembling, and don't forget to clean out the
operating valve. They tend to pick up sludge and eventually clog,
particularly if non-detergent oil has been used in the gearbox.

I am refurbishing the OD. All the mechanical parts look good and move
smoothly. There is a layer of sludge on the bottom of the case and in the
pistons and accumulator. The distance piece and the heavy spring came out
easily but the accumulator piston assembly is still in the case. How do you
get it out??

Thanks,

Ned Smith
