Gear Box Overhaul Help

What looked like an easy job has suddenly stalled.

1.      After removing the syncro stuff for 3 and 4 gears, I hit an oddity.
Both the shop manual and Moss say there should be 32 needle bearings under
3rd gear. I found 33. I counted them twice. I haven't gotten 2nd gear off
yet so I can't have confused them.
2.      How to get the main shaft ball bearing off? My bearing pullers won't
work over the long main shaft.

 

Any help is greatly appreciated.
