Mark,
A torn diaphragm will leak from the bottom of the carburetor usually at
the junction where the diaphragm is sandwiched or a little above as I
recall. They are not that hard to replace even though the carbs must be
removed from the vehicle. If you want to rebuild go with the full kit,
if you don't use everything you will then have spare parts available. I
know British car specialist carry genuine SU and others on the list may
have sources for better quality parts. You can just order new
diaphragms without having to do a complete rebuild as well.

Subject: Leaking HD8

I finally have a technical question. I have a leak in my front HD8 and
gas
comes from the bottom of the carburetor. I have taken off the float
cover
to see if the needle valve is defective and it is fine. The gas was
drained
out of the bowl. I checked for loose screws on the bottom of the carb,
but
they were tight. I am out of town, and will not be back until late
Friday
night. I am planning to remove both carburetors and rebuild them.
Should I
purchase a full rebuild kit or only the gasket kit and who should I get
them
from, as the prices vary greatly.

Thanks,

Mark Goodman
