That is indeed the correct nut Edwin, a throwback to the days of hand
cranking!!
Take a closer look at the mounts. The letters RH & LH are stamped in and are
about 1/2" high. Short of that I'm a bit stumped. There should be room to
get the fan belt through, although it is tight.

Thanks, Michael, but I can't discern any marks on the mounts designating
R or L and they look identical. I'll take your word that they aren't, so
will check them further. There has been no frame damage to the car, the
driveshaft slides freely fore and aft. The gearbox mounts fit very well
and were in no strain. I take it the engine tie rod you mention is the
rod at the rear of the transmission. The bushings there are in good
condition. The engine mounts appear to be square without any
distortion. Yet the clearance between the front cross member and the
nut on the pulley is only 1/8 inch.
The nut has a fitting for a hand crank, yet there is no way to access
this with a crank. Is this the correct nut or should it have a plain one?
