1. It does not use much oil (one-half quart in 1200 of Interstate driving).
Hot oil pressure is close to 42 PSI. It has never gotten hot while I have
had it. I have never had to add water to the radiator. Shifting is not
always smooth, probably due to my inexperience. It sometimes snipes going
from 2 to 3 if I press too hard. The hardest gear change is from 3 to 2. It
sometimes feels like 2 has disappeared. I hit a wall and can't find the 2
slot.
Compression tests showed 150 -155 on all cylinders except the bad one.
I followed Eds advice and bought a cheap ridge reamer. There was a ridge to
remove.
How can I tell if these are std. pistons?

With 87K on it, you can make a couple of educated
decisions;
1. If it is not using much oil, and the oil pressure
is good - ie 40 plus hot, then the chances are the
motor has been rebuilt at least once.
2. If it is using a quart every 500 miles, chances
are that it has about 50K since the last rebuild.
So it sounds like this is not a case of one cylinder
going bad on a 20K mile engine. So back to my
suggestions - probably fixes 2 or 3 are appropriate.
Your compressions were pretty good, and even as I
remember - that is good. Let us know what the pre
noise engine/trans characteristics were on oil
consumption, water consumption, clutch operation,
synchro operation, and oil leaks.
