Ron,
I did that once myself, but caught the mistake before I put the box back in
the car. (BTW, it is considerably easier to mate the overdrive to the
gearbox with the cam in backwards :) ).
To answer your questions:
1. You will find it much easier to mate the overdrive to the gearbox if
both are out of the car.
2. The gearbox must be pulled through the passenger compartment. I have
done this myself six or seven times (don't ask) and can do it in about three
and a half hours.

You know how it feels when you first realize you've make a major dumb
mistake and now you have to live with it or go back and fix it? Well, I just
realized that I installed the oil pump cam backwards in my overdrive. I
guess I could just not have a working overdrive but that would drive me nuts
so the overdrive must come out of my newly restored BN7. Here is the
question:
Is it possible to remove the overdrive leaving the transmission in place in
the car? It doesn't look possible but I thought I would ask.
Secondly, If I have to remove the transmission with the overdrive, (I don't
want to pull the engine), would you suggest dropping it out the bottom or
lifting it out through the passenger compartment? I've seen posts
discussing lifting it out through the passenger compartment but I don't know
if that was just because there was no way to lift the car high enough to
drop it down.
Any help is always appreciated.
