Tom, it's most likely your OD wasn't engaged, when you backed. The gear switch
disengages the OD when out of 3rd or 4th gear, although the OD switch is in on
position.

What??? I've forgotten to take my BJ8 out of Od a few times and had no
trouble at all backing while it was engaged. I know I was lucky I didn't
do damage, but the issue here is the ability to back while OD is engaged.
