Terry,
It sure sounds like o/d lockup to me. The reverse lockout switch must be 
defective. This switch prevents the o/d from activating when in 1st, 2nd, or 
reverse.
Check this out for sure. Accidentally operating the overdrive in reverse 
will very quickly destroy the unidirectional clutch in the overdrive.
