Late BN4 soft top bow

Listers:
I have a couple of questions on 4 seater top bow regarding the latches
and vinyl covering,
1. My top bow had latches attached with wooden shims (approx 1/4 in )
between the latch and the bow.
I'm assuming the shims provide clearance. Is this correct ?
2. The wooden bow was covered in black vinyl which partially covered
the latch base and the shims. Could someone confims whether this is
correct.
