Sam:
I usually try for 6 - 8 thou end float on the lay gear - less than 6 thou
and it becomes very difficult to assemble. Be sure to use the correct
part - one with oil channels on both faces of the washer, otherwise
lubrication may be insufficient and you'll have quicker wear.
The gear plungers that I believe that you refer to carry the same part
number as the later side shift gearboxes, as well as the earlier top-shift
box. I suggest checking with BCS in Stockton CA, or with Precision
Sportscar Services in Ontario, Canada, or possibly AH Spares in the UK.
There should be used ones available. If you really have no luck, I could
probably come up with a pair for you here - lots of gearbox bits lying
around these parts!
I used a very hard rubber sheet material to made a shift rail buffer and
glued it securely in the bottom of the recess. I've seen them come adrift
in there and get all chewed up by the action of the rails, which may be
worse than not having it installed in the first place. Another lister has
mentioned using a flooring material ( linoleum I think) - sounds like a good
idea to me - the stuff'l be tougher than rubber. Again, a chat on the
'phone with David at BCS would be helpful - they may have the buffer
available made of a suitable material that has worked for them.

Subject: Transmission rebuild
I have a few questions in regard to my BJ8 transmission. Just
remember this is my first time that I have been inside of one of these
things.
1. One of my work shop manuals says that if the end float exceeds .012
on the layshaft
unit, the thrust washer should be replaced. Mine does, so I
will have to order a
new one. My question is, what is the minimum end float that I
should try to
establish?
2. There doesn't seem to be a supplier for gear plungers(detent
plungers). Springs
are available, but not plungers. Can I assume that you make your
own and if so
how do you determine length and width? I am missing the two
plungers that fit on
the main shaft.
3. I have read in the archives about the buffer pad that mounts in the
bell housing
which keeps the shifters shafts from going to far, causing
problems with the
sliding hub balls. Is there a supplier or again do you make
your own, if so what is
the best material?
I would appreciate your input. Thanks in advance.
