I had a guy flag me down once, he was so excited, he has had a car just like
mine 30 years or so ago when he was in college. The more we talked the more
I was sure he had had an MGA, this is a guy that owned a car (albeit a long
time ago). To the rest of the world, even the many car people, our subtle
distinctions are meaningless, as in they don't convey any meaning to who we
are talking to.
When I am talking to the people in my multi-make car club my AH is a '54
100/4, when I am communicating with this list it is a BN1. To the group I
am talking to that is what best conveys what the car is, so hopefully a
light bulb goes off in the person I am talking to's head and they know what
I mean.
When I am talking to people I want them to know what I mean, not impress
them with my knowledge or prove a point. More people understand 100/4 than
Hundred, it eliminates the second question from people who know a little bit
about sports cars (4 or 6?). There are all things we have more or less
expertise on, if someone comes and starts talking to me about quantum
physics (assuming for some reason I care) I would rather they use terms I
understand than those that only people in quantum physics understand.
Lastly I guess you can make the arguement that they should know and should
use the right term, well they don't and they aint gonna, so what is the
point of getting so worked up about it?
Lastly, did you ever work at a place and you have a guy named "Jim", then a
second guy comes along named "Jim" and the first guy becomes "Big Jim"? See
the connection? anyone? anyone? )(Bueller? Bueller?)
Just don't start calling my car a Pinto
