Dick,
You aren't the only one who had a charmed life while owning a tricarb.
Many years ago circa 1976 thru 1984 I owned a tricarb (HBT7L18718) and this
car ran extremely well. The carbs were simple to tune and while I did
eventually end up rebuilding them because of throttle shaft wear, they were
not a problem. Idle would be adjusted as smoothly as can be, mixture too.
Once set, the only thing I did to these carbs at the beginning of each
season, year after year was to pull the dashpots, clean them and the pistons
off with a clean cloth, reoil the dampers and reinstall for another season
of trouble free motoring.
Bottom line, it's not the carbs fault. Having had to find, rebuild, assemble
and tune is a lot of ground to cover. You'll get it debugged and then things
will be fine.
FWIW, check that a choke linkage isn't hanging up somewhere leaving you with
an extra rich mixture on one when you think you have the chokes released.
