Deep cycle batteries are--at least on boats--typically used for "Ship's Service" loads, such as inverters or DC refrigeration, where batteries are charged up and then drained down to relatively low states of charge, etc. Starting batteries have, I believe, more CCA's and are used for--obviously--starting applications.
