Nick:

When you say 'alternator' do you mean regulator? Or is your car alternator
equipped? Also, is your starter solenoid the original type which has a
rubber 'button' on it's rear surface - you'll have to reach around to the
back of it to tell. Use caution - when you press the button forward, the
starter will crank the engine whether the key is on or off.

If you have this type of solenoid, connect a jumper between the disconnected
bundled white wires and the disconnected brown wire at the back of the
ignition switch - this will bypass the switch for testing purposes. Crank
the engine manually with the button on the solenoid - careful, it may start.
If it does, you'll need to disconnect the jumper to stop it. (or turn off
the battery master switch in the boot, or pull a low tension coil wire off)

The white/red wire is used to power the starter solenoid when the key
switch is turned to the start position, and is out of the picture as soon as
the key is released - it will not have power when the brown wire is
disconnected from the switch.

I'll be real surprised if the ignition switch turns out to be the problem.

Let us know.

The search goes on.
How does one start the engine by bypassing the ignition switch on a BJ8?

Term.#1: wht/red wire from switch to starter solenoid.

Term.#2: 3 wht wires. A-from switch to cold fuse
B-from switch to coil via the tach
C-from switch to ignition light (red) and on
to the altenator.

Term.#3: havier brown wire from switch to altenator and starter solenoid in
line with the battery.

Do you touch the brown wire and the white wire (A) ? Then when it runs, do
you
disconnect or switch wires?
Thanks, Nick
