Hmm, I'm surprised at the situation of having the radiator and air dam parts
removed. I inserted my BJ7 surround and grill with those parts in and only
the dams loosened. Not being an expert on this, I would defer to others.
You might check the list archives for the discussion on this subject.

Subject: BJ8 surround installation
05/14/2004
Ref: BJ8
Greetings all:
Having made a study of the surround/grill into a BJ8 and being further
behind of where I started, may I check in with the list:
Starting with the front of the car on blocks, the radiator and air dam
parts removed, the wheels off, the 'surround' in one hand, the 'chromed top
surround trim piece' in the other, and a handful of installation hardware in
the other, as I now understand it . . . . . . . :
The surround goes into place with all five of it's tabs - three upper
tabs and two lower tabs - BEHIND the shroud.
Then - the top chromed trim piece (of the surround) is held into place
with it's front edge fit into the surround receiving grove and the chrome
trim piece rear edge against the shroud itself - the upper three surround
tabs
still positioned on the back side of the shroud.
Then - the three '2-way grill stud' bolts go in from the engine side of
the three surround tabs through each of the three tabs - and continue
forward
through the three matching holes in the shroud - and on into the threaded
fixed nuts at the rear edge of the chrome trim piece.
The installation of the lower part of the surround and installation of
associated air dam parts - and installation of the grill assembly - follows
later.
That isn't my concern though at this point.
My question to the list here concerns only the assembly sequence of the
surround and upper trim piece onto/into the shroud.
Would you say the description above is a fair description of the
surround/upper trim piece installation sequence. If so I'm ready to
proceed.
If not where am I missing it.
I haven't seen a clear depiction yet or narrative of the assembly
sequence in the books.
