The tool has several parts. One is a temporary replacement for the pinion g=
ear and the other sits in the bearing saddles of the carrier. Both the carr=
ier and pinion are removed to use the tool. You insert the replacement pini=
on, sit the other part in the saddles and with the attached dial gauge, you=
measure the depth of the tool. There is a lot more that goes into it but y=
ou may get the idea of how it works. Sets the depth perfect every time and =
then all you have to do is set the backlash and check for wear pattern with=
paint or Dykem Blue. Got the tool when I bought an old British car junk ya=
rd. Also have a special tool to set valve lash within .0005" using a dial g=
auge set-up. Not sure if they need to be that accurate for our old cars.

Barry, when you are measuring TR pinion depth, where are you measuring from=
and to?=C2=A0 The TR3 manual only has the dimension from the front face of=
the pinion to the center of the ring gear which would be impossible to mea=
sure directly with the pinion gear installed.=C2=A0 =C2=A0

There is a factory set of tools that one uses to measure pinion depth befor=
e taking a diff apart. Then you set the new pinion at the same depth plus o=
r minus the number on the gear.

The "92" is the "matched set" number and should correspond with the set num=
ber on the ring gear.=C2=A0 The other number is the difference in pinion sh=

So far I have only put the car in the air and pulled the cover. There is am=
ple evidence of excessive heat so something went wrong with my setup.=C2=A0
I might get the chance to pull it all out of the car and take some measurem=
ents on Sunday. Once I do, I=E2=80=99ll share my original setup notes and w=
hat I measure upon disassembly.
On a related note. I ordered a new gear set from Rimmer on Monday and it ar=
rived in Austin today, standard shipping. Amazing. Way faster than some of =
our domestic suppliers.=C2=A0
This new gear set was supplied by Bastuck. Hopefully lasts a little longer.=

available. He had 4:11, the 4:55 and 4:88 (great fun but useless). The 4:1=
1 went in the car when I sold it, the 4:88 were put in a locked diff and pl=

have prevented failure, but as Marcel says, checking the temperature of th=
e diff could have stopped the damage. The likely culprits are incorrect eng=
agement or bad parts, but anything that heats the gears enough to cook the =
oil off the parts will kill the gears. I had a close call with one of the g=
ear sets I use. Apparently I screwed up somewhere in checking fit=E2=80=94w=
hen I pulled the rear end to assess the problem there was no backlash. I ha=
ve a huge finned differential cover so checking temperature doesn=E2=80=99t=
help, but I could feel the car slowing quickly between shifts. Fortunately=
I wasn=E2=80=99t doing my usual clutchless shifts and noticed the sudden d=
eceleration every time I disengaged the clutch. The gear teeth were slightl=
y blued and the oil smelled like a cesspool, but the gears were still usabl=
