Why run an alternator? Do vintage rules require an alternator and a lead acid
battery?

Get rid of the alternator and battery and save 30lbs . Get an "antigravity
battery". It weighs 3 lbs, it is safer and has enough power to run the
ignition and fuel pump easily for a couple of 25 min sessions. Get a simple
volt meter in the dash . It starts at about 13.4 volts and ends @ 12.9
depending on how much you need to crank. Heck get two -one to power the
starter and one smaller for the rest of the car.

That's what I'm told anyways.

Bill, could I use my Denso alternator setup to charge the LiPos or what
charging system is required??

More realistically: Typical single cell lipo is 3.7V nominal, 4.3 V fully
charged so four cells in series is nominally 14 to 16. Volts, which makes
electronic ignition systems much happier than the 12.5 volts of lead acid
batteries. A typical little battery for a RC model is 5000mah (or 5AH in more
normal parlance) and it's a little smaller than a pound of butter. While one of
them might actually crank your motor, five or six is a better bet. I had ten
handy that I'm no longer using (new drone) so I put them together for peyote.
50AH, 1000Amps of cranking current. If I ever draw that my starter wire will
probably vaporize, but the starter spins briskly. pertronix ignition at 6000
rpm draws five amps. So eight to ten hours of running flat out. That's the
biggest load by far unless you're running an electric water pump.

People's bad experience with total loss has to do mostly with lead acid
batteries. Electronics are generally designed to run at alternator voltage of
14V. With typical voltage drop an LA battery might drop to 11V at full load.
LiPos start with a higher voltage and don't droop as much, so everything works
better.

You know, these days I could build a battery that would power any race car for
a couple of weeks and weigh fifteen pounds. Why would I bother charging it??
It?s 2017. I made a battery recently that lets me weld aluminum. I can put it
in a lunchbox. Alternator, really? Why?

I'm not sure of the shaft diameter on the Denso
alternator, but here's a couple of
possibilities. I think I'm running the first one.

basically, search for "alternator pulleys" on www.summitracing.com
