Sam,
I always replace the cup and the cone. Used to work for Federal Mogul AKA B=
ower BCA in the 80's, I have seen way way too many issues with doing it hal=
f way.
I don't see how I can set any pre load. There isn't any adjustment I can de=
al with, that I can see. Can you explain, maybe I am dumber than I thought?=
? LOL!!

You need to get the pre-load right on those axles. Hard to explain but ther=
e needs to be a little drag on the bearing once assembled. Also change the=
race with new bearings.

Sam,
Ok good intel thanks.
On mine the axle bearings always seem loose in relation to the axle and bea=
ring rolling elements. I have replaced the bearings a couple of times and w=
hile on the lift it seems tighter. Then you run a couple of races and it's =
is the same amount of looseness again. One side seems to be looser than th=
e other too, by hand feel no scientific measuring.
Am I chicken since my 4 roll axle failure, or is this normal by your stand=
ards?? I have Sommers Bros axles in another car and they seem to stay tight=
er and evenly the same from left to right.

It is a Corvair axle. Problem I see is the flange broke, not the axle. I su=
spect you had excessive run out on the flange, and the torque of the lugs m=
ay have stressed it. Never had anything like this in 40 years. Still use th=
e Corvair set up in my Vintage sixes, no issues. Good parts makes a better =
set upon you wish to upgrade, but the Corvair set up should be fine, just m=

Duncan, not a lot more to tell about the axle unless you saw something I di=
dn't. It was a used competition axle that I got almost three race weekends =
out of. Unknown brand but larger diameter shaft than stock and one piece de=
sign. It's funny, I guess I have a better track record racing with stock ax=
les than upgraded ones.
The incident itself was uneventful, braking hard and down shifting for a sl=
ow turn after a long straight. The right rear corner dropped a couple inche=
s turning me sideways then I slid off track left. I could see my wheel keep=
going several hundred feet. When I came to a stop I chuckled and thought t=
hat's just part of this sport. Easy to laugh about it when no people or car=
s where hurt... much.

That's consistent with what I've found with the R888 pressures.
I am faster with R888s but that's likely due to going from 60s to 50s.

What cold tyre pressures are you using for the R888s?
The car is a '62 Spitfire - 1425 Lbs with 5.5x13 wheels The tyres have bee=
n shaved and heat cycled.
I have heard that they work best hot in the low 40 psi range and you should=
start off at 33-35 psi.
Looking for others thoughts and experiences.
