If the chassis surgery required to install the Borg-Warner is simply
more work than the guy wants to entertain, and no modern equivalent is
suitable, I'll throw out a couple of wild-assed guesses on other
options--a decent fab and machining shop could probably adapt the
working bits of the VW automatic stick shift to the car.

Funny you should mention that, as the VW Beetle's 'semi-automatic' -- if I
remember correctly --- was rather similar to what was called
'Standrive' on the Standard 10 sedan and 'Triumatic' (or 'Trimatic' -- depends
on what factory literature you're reading) on the Triumph 10.
Maybe Mike Cook would know if any Triumph 10s were actually sold here in the
US with Triumatic, which used hydraulics, servos and other
bells and whistles to actuate the clutch via the shift lever while keeping the
original four-speed gearbox.
