I'm trying to use just steel bushings and you MUST make sure that all the
end-float settings are perfect. In some cases that means the case is toast
because the end float for the lay-shaft is knackered. I suppose you could
use shims on the laygears to get the end-float in spec, but that's for the
pros... I have no idea how to source a shim that might work on the
layshaft.
For the mainshaft bushings, I get steel bushings from either John Esposito
(www.quantumechanics.com) or Moss (they have a "kit" that replaces the
bronze with steel). Either "solution" is not cheap, the bushings alone are
$150 and then you usually have to replace "stuff" that's been beaten or
broken over time.
Alternate gearboxes look better every day.
