Keep in mind, you aren't trying to save that old seal. I have, on occasion,
wound up entirely destroying the seal and removing it in pieces.
Eg, grab the inner lip with vise grips, and pry it out. If it breaks, bend
down the broken corners, grab them and try again.
As an absolute last resort, cut a groove in just the seal outer housing
(you'll have pried and broken all of the inner bits away by now) with a
Dremel and cutoff wheel. Not all the way through, just enough to weaken it
so it will break there.
