I finally made the CVAR driver's school. I would like to thank this
list as most of you contributed in my efforts to transform a rust bucket
into a race car. Specifically I would like to acknowledge the
sacrifices of my family that made this event possible. My wife spent
many a lonely night wondering if I would ever come back into the house.
I wonder why she puts up with me especially when I was breaking in the
engine at 4am the morning of the event. She has really gone above and
beyond the call these past few months while I painted and assembled the
car. I have a huge debt to repay to her.
I would like to thank fellow FOT member Bob Blake for infecting me with
this disease in my early childhood by dragging me all around north Texas
looking for this TR3. His passion for Triumphs rubbed off on me much to
my wife's chagrin. Although he will deny it, he was a very helpful crew
member this weekend while attending to a tech list about a page long
that needed to be resolved before Saturday evening. He also spent the
previous weekend helping me install the engine and transmission. Thanks
Dad.
I would like to thank Bob Kramar for his countless hours spent answering
technical questions over the past 4 years and helping me through my
first weekend. It is such a treat to have people like Bob around.
After arriving at TWS 10 minutes late Friday morning, I went off to my
class room session with a thermostat housing acting like a blow hole. I
come back to a unit that is sealed up with some magical John Deer
product which held tight for the weekend. For those of you that have
not met Bob, he is one of those individuals that does not ask permission
to help, he assesses the situation and dives right in without getting in
the way. I would have never made it through the weekend without Bob,
and his tools. His Wife even brought me a spare oil filter head from
his stock of spares to help me with an oil pressure issue. They did all
of this while their son Andrew was also taking the driver's school in a
car that is very well prepared by Bob.
As for the performance of the car, I have a few issues that I need help
on.
1st oil pressure. I am running with Chevy rods which I know some others
on the list are also running. For those of you running these rods as a
piston guided setup, what oil pressure do you see cold & hot at 2000 &
5000 rpm? By the end of Saturday, I had the relief valve turned up such
that cold at 2000rpm I was running 80psi. This got me to where I was
seeing 60psi hot at 5000rpm. This seemed a bit low to me. When coming
into the pits and the engine going below 2000rpm the pressure was
dropping below 40psi. This was all with 20-50 VR1.
Differential issues. I was experiencing excessive noise all weekend
from the rear of the car. On Sunday it got bad enough to trailer the
car. When I put it up in the air to investigate the source of the
noise, I could take the driveshaft right at the input flange of the diff
and move the input shaft of the diff in all directions about 1/4". This
was a freshly rebuilt unit. I have not had a chance to pull the diff
yet to open it up and investigate, but I am looking for any experience
in what can cause a pinion bearing to let go at such an early stage n
its life.
Thanks,
Greg
