Joe,
Check to see if you have any radial run out in either the crankshaft or
camshaft gear. This may not seem like an issue for your type of failure.
However, if you indeed have run out greater than a few thou, the chain
tensioner will be continually flexing, rather than simply exerting tension
force on the chain. This flexing will eventually lead to fatigue, and the
most likeliest point will be close to the fixed end of the tensioner.
I have had NEW crank gears with more than 0.020" thou of radial run out in
them and once the timing chain drive has been assembled, you can physically
see the tensioner being flexed while turning the engine over by hand.
Hope this helps

Subject: [Fot] TR3/4 Timing Chain Tensioner
Amici, I took my engine apart this weekend and found another broken timing
chain tensioner. This is the 3rd or 4th one that has broken (not all with
this same block). Some have broken in a season or less, while this one was
used last season and then failed sometime this season. These have been from
the 3 major parts suppliers, but I did not keep track of which one was from
who.
Any suggestions on oned that seem to last longer than others, or what I am
doing wrong that is causing the failures? They are not wearing thru, but
rather are snapping off about an inch from the pivot. Any better designed
tensioners out there for the tractor motors? Joe(B)
