I asked at a local smog shop; and was told that most of the units could not
handle enough power for full load even with a relatively small engine.
Apparently the smog test is done under light load (cruise conditions) and
small dynos are cheaper than big ones. However, they claimed to have a larger
unit that could handle up to 150 rwhp, and were willing to sell me dyno time
by the hour.
Unfortunately, I never took them up on the offer; don't even know if they are
still there. ISTR the shop was off of Artesia Blvd in Bellflower, CA, but
that's not much to go on. And after they insisted on testing my Chevy in 3rd
gear (leading to a failure because the EGR valve wouldn't open at such high
manifold vacuum), I never went back.
If they quoted a price for an hour of dyno time, I don't remember it.
