I use a long wrench extension to fit the tappet in.
By accident my wrench extension has about the same inside diameter as the
tappet.
With the pusrod or a screwdriver I upright the tappet, then I slip in the
wrench extension and with the extension the tappet is centered and slip in
very easy.
Try it!
cheers
Chris

You should be able to fiddle it back in. sometimes they get cocked a
little.
You might try a magnet applied to the edge while you hold the tappet down
with
the pushrod. I've been able to get them back in when I do exactly what
you
did--let the suction pull the tappet out.

I wasn't paying close enough attention when I removed the rocker
assembly this afternoon. One of the pushrods pulled a tappet out of its
bore. Oh sh*t!! I've tried all I can think of to slip it back into the
bore. It seems to sit at the top of the bore, but just doesn't want to
slide in. So far I've avoided the BFH technique, but am running out of
patience and am *really* pissed at myself, so stepped away from it for
the afternoon.
Suggestions? I really don't want to pull the head, as that will destroy
Uncle Jack's fantastic head gasket.
TIA
jim
