One rod manufacturer I talked with said they can supply rods in
titanium for the bargain basement price of about $460 per rod. On the
other hand, there are less expensive approaches to lowering rod weight.
Carillos weigh about 680 grams per rod. Pauter, Cunningham, Saenz all
weigh in at about the same. There are domestic rods that can be
converted for TR use that weigh 650 grams per rod. One car will
shortly be racing with these rods. Not all that much weight savings,
but the set I just converted for a friend cost less than half of what
Carillos cost. Then if you want to buy new Wiseco pistons and have
them made to accept shorter pins, you can reduce the weight of the
rod / pin / piston assembly by another 20 grams by using lightweight pins.
Then there's one more approach to lightweight rods that would give
rods of about 550 grams and still cost less than Carillos.
Tantalizing, huh? But when I survey the FOT list for interest, I
don't come up with enough genuine interest to make the whole thing
viable from the standpoint of bringing these to market and making a
decent profit for all the effort, so I've run out of steam.
If there is enough interest, I'll write this up and put it on Tony's web site.
