Now that I remember, back when I was racing my Honda 750F DOHC bike, it was
common practice to reuse/move around the shims until you got the correct
clearances.  Of course, those shims were lying in a constant pool of oil
during operation and didn't have the "advantage" of fine British metallurgy
:)
