Cams and followers

After all the talk of keeping the buckets matched with the lobes and using
new/hardened ones with a new cam, I can't help remembering the many times I
sorted shims on my double over-head cam Fiats, Alfa and Jags (and an old
Renault, if I remember correctly).  Just mix and match until I got the right
valve clearance.  Any difference, or did I just get lucky in not having
problems?
