TR4A exhaust gasket

Amici:  I need to replace the intake/exhaust gaskets on the TR4 race engine.
Last time I just put them on and tightened everything down, but after 5
weekends one end has burned completely away.  Is there anything I should put
on them before installation or am I looking at a warped face on the header
or something like that?  The good news is that in 5 weekends nothing
expensive or even inconvenient has broken (knock wood).  Thanks, Don
