Related to this, I happened across an interesting 40-year-old article
recently. It appears in the _1961 Sports Cars Illustrated Directory; complete
buyersb guide to what's new in the newest cars!_ The article, "A Hastier
Herald" by Dennis May, describes -- amongst other numerous modifications to
the 948cc Herald engine -- "a new device" by Alexander Engineering Co. Ltd,
of Haddenham, (Bucks.), England: "b&flexible carburetor mounting by means of
rubber spacers of calculated thickness and resilience, located between the
carb and manifold flanges. The spacers have integral collars through which
the flange bolts pass, so there is no metal-to-metal contact at all. Purpose
of this gook, which is said to be worth 5 bhp on some engines, is to
eliminate needle chatter, frothing in the float chambers and any tendency for
the piston dampers to 'tip' under vibration."
Sounds a bit like what others here have described.... :-)
