I would have the crank magged while you are at it, as it was not supported
once the cap broke.
I run a reinforcement under my center cap, which became legal in scca
some years ago. Before that, people called it an oil pump support. If you
do this,
it should be hand lapped to a flat spot in the cap for ZERO preload.
A different cap needs to be line HONED, which will cause problems with the
rear
seal and move the crank centerline up. Check the block for cracks at the
main
bearing set screw holes.
