Here is some info I found on Rallye about different fenders/sizes:
Front Fenders vary in the size of the flare<http://www.datsunroadster.com/P=
IC_PAGES/PARTS_INFO_PAGES/fender_flare_info.htm>, the park light hole<http:=
//www.datsunroadster.com/PIC_PAGES/PARTS_INFO_PAGES/fender_holes_info.htm>,=
and what the shape of the side marker light hole<http://www.datsunroadster=
.com/PIC_PAGES/PARTS_INFO_PAGES/fender_holes_info.htm> is, if any. Emblem h=
oles, (if predrilled), may be different on some years. Some fenders were dr=
illed for other countries or not drilled at all. Although some people feel =
the shape of the rear upper end of the fenders where they hit the cowl and =
upper part of the door is different between 68-70 and older cars, there see=
ms to be as much difference between one 68 fender to another 68 or from one=
67 1/2 fender to another 67 1/2 as there is between a 67 1/2 and a 68! The=
rear most part of the 63-64 and 65 1500 fenders differ, although NOS repla=
cement fenders have had only one of the styles for at least 28 years. (Pics=
and Info)<http://www.datsunroadster.com/PIC_PAGES/PARTS_INFO_PAGES/fender_=
holes_info.htm#POINT> Fenders depending on production run also can vary aro=
und headlight area as well. It was not intentional, they just vary due to i=
nadequate quality control. The headlight rims themselves can vary a lot. Al=
ways fit the headlight scoop to the fender before painting the fender. Don'=
t assume the mounting holes (if they are already there) for the headlight s=
coop trims are in the best place. I did have a body shop tell me one time i=
t was easy to flare the 1500 fender into a medium flare 65-67 1600 fender t=
han it was to "deflare" a later fender to work on the earlier 1600. But tha=
t was just one person's opinion.
The last time we did a warehouse reshuffling I pulled a large number of new=
fenders and doors out and had a couple of people try to find differences. =
We also recently hung a few on undamaged cars. We found far more variance i=
n the SAME part than we did from one year's part to another year's. We comp=
ared new parts to new parts, new to used and used to used. If you look at a=
bunch of 65 and 66 cars that all would have the "older" point shape, they =
vary also.
Hanging the same fender on multiple same year undamaged cars gives differen=
t results also. The way body panels fit on the roadster isn't that precise.=
There are what I could see as different "point shapes" on the rear upper p=
art of the fender, (different angles, curves), but I found all these differ=
ent "shapes" on 68-70 fenders and all of them on 63-67 1/2 fenders. For eac=
h year we found some that were more blunt, or more "pointed", and some that=
more of a two step curve as the fender heads down the door line. I almost =
wonder if the rearmost upper "tip" of the fender was hand formed after pull=
ing the fender out of the forming tool, with the variances we found. All of=
the fenders are the exact same length from rear most upper point tip to th=
e headlight edge. The mounting position of the fender is a tad bit differen=
t though. Starting on the 68 models, when the cowl and windshield were chan=
ged, the upper rear most hanging bracket was altered. Unlike the nut on the=
older cars, which was fixed, the nut on the 68-70 cars was made to float i=
n it's receptacle to allow a little fender position adjustment. At it's max=
imum "outward-mounting" position though, it still forces the fender inward =
1/4 inch from the 67 1/2's. The change in the nut location may be the only =
consistant difference between a 67 1/2 fender and a 68.
So right off the bat, all other things being equal, hanging a 68-70 fender =
on an older car will give an decreased gap. Hanging an older fender on a 68=
-70 will give an increased gap. But things are never equal and these cars a=
nd their parts seem to vary A LOT. You can compensate for this regardless o=
f the problem by slotting the mounting hole on the car or redoing the brack=
et. Body shops sometimes have to do far worse than this repairing accident =
damage.
Most of this is moot anyway as only some of the different fenders are avail=
able in a new part, and used parts may have far more problems than just a t=
iny edge shape difference (if there ever was one!)
I too thought I read somewhere that there are different flares between 1970=
and others, but I can't recall where I read that.
