Rather than using a .017 feeler gauge and judging the feel I use a .016 and 
 a .018. The .018 will not go in, the .016 does and you are good to go. If 
you  want to do cold setting then set your engine warm then let it cool 
overnight and  remeasure. That is your engine's cold settings. 
 
The problem I had before my engine rebuild was that the valve adjustment  
changed a lot. Set it one time good, check a few days later and they were all 
 over the place. Turned out to be bad lobes on the cam. Six of the eight 
were  damaged so as the lifters rotated the clearance changed. What I did was 
reset as  I found tight ones and left loose ones alone. That way they varied 
from correct  to loose but never tight. Didn't hurt performance too much. I 
was slowing down  after trying to keep up with something a bit sportier and 
got a speeding ticked  at 95 mph. (not reccomended)

And HOT is (as far as I know) the ONLY way to set them. Engine is  typically
HOT after a short run to the liquour store, so you can acquire  what is
