Don't laugh...
I've used a packet of Taco Bell mild taco sauce squirted into
the connector and let sit for a day to remove some hard corrosion. Then once
it was cleaned out and dry, I used an emery board (nail) file cut to fit into
the connector to further clean the contacts.
