The only thing I could think would spontaniously re-engage the starter is
the switch or the a short in the starter harness. Someone mentioned
somewhere, I forget, the gear reduction is a bit different from the
originalBendix type. The gear is pushed out to engage the flywheel, them it
starts spinning after it's fully extended.
We shall see, I'm sure the problem will be found.

Good point, but why would he allow the engine to idle both times with the
"high pitch whirling sound" that it was making prior to burning up the
starter?. Or phrased a different way, why would he note a "different" sound
upon returning to the car if the starter never disengaged?
