Hi Matt....
Had the same thing happen to may car a few years back but unfortunately we
didn't catch it in time so the battery got boiled and a few other parts got
toasted too.?Small?aircraft have ON/OFF swithch's to the alternator for just
such an occasion and I am seriously considering the same for my car.?(Of course
you can't exactly pull over and deal with the problem when you're in the air?)
Definitely a bummer that it happened but from a "glass is half full"
perspective it was a?good thing you were paying attention so it didn't get
worse.

Subject: [Roadsters] Mitty Bad News
Hi All,
Bad news from North Georgia/East Tennessee. I was on my way VERY early this
morning. I had meant to leave yesterday but had electrical problems with the
car. I worked on it all day yesterday. Thought I had it all figured out by
11:00 last night. Leaving around 5:00 this morning; I had just crossed from
TN to GA. My Volt Meter decided to peg to the right. With the car charging
at 18 volts, I decided to come home. I disconnected the alternator and drove
home on battery. I barely made it since it was dark and I had the lights on.
When I pulled in to my parking space, my battery was at about 9 volts. And
it's raining. Who needs a drink?
I'm very disappointed since I've been planning this trip for 2 years.
One VERY sad boy in Chattanooga,
Matt
