What Andy said.

For those of you that don't know, I work at the Veterans Hospital in Temple,
on I-35 halfway between DFW and San Antonio. Two years ago ABC Primetime
aired an "expose", actually an evisceration, of our long term care wing
specifically and the hospital in general. It included "hidden camera"
footage of one of our long term care wings, illegally used since they didn't
get releases from the patients or staff. That's a major violation of both
patient privacy and personal privacy laws. AFAIK, they haven't been
prosecuted. If most of us did that we'd lose our jobs, probably get sued and
end up in jail.

FWIW, I'm a TV engineer/editor/photographer (officially an A/V production
specialist). Basically I shoot and edit training videos, document events
(including surgeries! UGH!) and shoot stills as needed. Yes, it's a great
gig and I consider myself blessed. Give me some video and interviews and I
can edit it to convey any point of view you want, from 100% positive to 100%
negative and anywhere in between, using the same footage. Made even easier
using biased narration carefully edited and placed.

I KNOW that's exactly what ABC did to us, and I'm reasonably sure they're
still doing it. In our case they used footage shoot in the early '90s under
totally different circumstances in the north east, but never clarified that.
In fact the way it was used implied that everything they showed was present
day, in our facility. They interviewed a senior under secretary of
healthcare from DC and cut the interview to make him appear hesitant,
stumbling and inarticulate. I've met the man since, interviewed him myself
and he's none of the above.

I lost a lot of respect for both ABC and Diane Sawyer when they aired this
story. The news divisions of the networks are usually the biggest revenue
producers and theirs primary focus is attracting viewers who watch the
advertising they've sold on these "news" programs. It's all about spinning
the story.

My opinion,
Ron
