I've heard the opposite.
"When the clutch is in and the the bearing whines, it's the throwout bearing."
and "don't hold the clutch down when at a stop light, it puts unnecessary wear
on the throwout bearing"
Correct me if I'm wrong:
The pressure plate is bolted to the flywheel which is spinning with the
engine. When you step on the clutch, the shift fork pushes the throwout
bearing against the pressure plate spines, isn't this when the bearing spins
with the engine?

Someone mentioned tranny shaft bearing, but I'd guess it's more likely
to be a clutch throw-out bearing about to go down. When you push the
clutch pedal in, the bearing stops spinning, and thus stops making noise.
