Mike:

No trick, unless you call Datsun switching parts in mid-stream a trick. Take
a look at the following diagram kindly provided online by Gordon Glasgow.
There are three different backup switch assemblies for the 4 speed
transmission. I have yet to find the one that works in my car, so a plug
fills the hole until I do. I'll warn you right now some are metric thread
and some SAE, so take it easy on that aluminum transmission case!

I gather there is some kind of trick to installing the reverse light switch
into the side of the transmission, to have it function properly. I have
tried
2 new ones, the reverse lamp either doesn't come on at all when shifted to
reverse, or it stays on all the time no matter what gear it's in. I've tried
inserting it with the lever already engaged in reverse, in neutral, or in
each
of the other gears. The lamp circuit appears good as the lamp will light
when
the wires going to the switch are brought together.
When the circuit is activated with the switch outside (not installed) of the
transmission, the light comes on until the plunger tip is depressed. Plunger
out - light on, plunger in - light out.
Any Help, please?
Thanks,
