This is the key bit of info.
It's not the gas gauge. It's the gauge voltage regulator (not to
be confused with the alternator regulator under the hood).

This is a small rectangular metal box under the dash near the
steering column. Two wires but three connections 'cause that
case needs to be grounded via the mounting screw (if it's not
grounded, your gauges will read way high, probably pinned).

Check the connections for corrosion and tightness. That's
likely the problem, if it's an intermittent. New units were available
thru the dealer not long ago and probably still are, but usually
a dead box means solid no-gauges or solid way-high gauges.

disclaimer: it *could* be lots of other things - flaky fuse, loose
connection elsewhere. But overwhelmingly likely is the connection
at this regulator.
