It seems that many roadster people are partial to Redline. I understand (or
at least have heard) that a) you break in a new engine w/ regular oil, then
switch to a synthetic, and b) don't switch a high-mileage engine to a
synthetic.
Can anyone elaborate on this, or point me to references that do? I have been
using Castrol GTX in all my vehicles since 1989 except the 2002 Ford Ranger,
which I switched to Mobil 1 at 5k miles.
Thanks.

As a one-time AmsOil dealer I can tell you that AmsOil will clean your
engine right out, including the crud in the ring lands. I am not sure you
want that type of performance from your engine oil at this stage of your
engines life. It would clean out all of the varnish holding the valve
guides and ??? together as well.
I don't know what the detergent effects of Redline, Castrol, Mobile 1
(paraffin based, so it is unlikely to clean things out as well), or any of
the newer synthetics might be.
I would not suggest synthetic for a higher mileage engine, but if you
rebuild you should certainly consider synthetic. AmsOil makes a
parasynthetic (partial) oil that is for breaking in a new engine up to 7500
miles, then move to full synthetic for maximum engine life. That will be
the plan when I finally rebuild the U20 hanging on my engine stand.

For years I was running Castrol 20/50 and as of recently switched to hi
mileage 20/50 which seems to be slowing down the oil burn off. Not so much
of the puffy blue smoke on take off.
Do you think switching to synthetic will improve the burn off properties any
more?
