Hi Keith,
Not bagging whoever did the valve job, BUT, it sounds to me like the
camshaft/oil pump/distributor have not been indexed properly on re-assembly.
To ascertain this, you need to set the engine on TDC for #1 on compression
stroke, then check where the dist. rotor is, and what the cam is doing.
A good shop manual will explain what you are looking for, it is a bit tough
to write it all down here for you.
My auto '73 240 had a similar issue, went like a scalded cat till it reached
about 50mph then literally ran out of puff.
Cause, cactus cam timing!
