Hey fellow Roadster junkies -
Ok, still cleaning out my office from the flood.
I walked by the TV and they had the Cops show on. So, I thought about my
experiences with the Police and my Roadster. Not to discredit Police
Officers and the great work they do. We are all indebted to them.
1978 - I was driving my '68 Roadster down from the cabin which is at Cascade
lake in North/central Idaho. I was dropping down the first hill and come up
on a VW van. The hill was long and pretty steep. I was amazed that this
old VW was going 70 MPH! So I just tucked in behind him instead of passing
- always pass slow cars before the corners...... About 1/2 way down the
hill I see an Idaho State Trooper at the base of the hill shooting radar. I
did not worry because the VW was between me and him. We go by and I see the
Trooper throw on the blues. He comes up behind me and I slow to give him
room between me and the VW - he stays on my ass so I pull over. I jump out
and start yelling at him and want to know why he pulled me over and not the
VW. This did not make him happy and grabs me by the arm, escorts me to the
passenger side of his car and sits me down. He walks to his side and gets
in to start his "very loud" explanation as to why he pulled me over, and
shows me the radar readout - 72 MPH.
I set there for ever, so mad I could not see straight. He finally writes
the ticket, I get out, leave the door open, walk back to my car with him on
my heals. I get in, start the Roadster, drop into first gear, look up at
him and drop the clutch at 6 grand. As I hit the pavement I look up in the
mirror and I am throwing gravel all over him and his car as he runs back to
get in. He jumps in, starts up the car, hits the blues, and realizes that
the passenger side door is still open. He can not reach the door, so he
jumps out and starts running around the car to close the door with the
reddest face I have ever seen - I lose sight of him as I blow around a
corner in 3rd, wide ass open...
2 weeks later I show up in court to pay the ticket, still mad and ready for
a fight.. The Judge called my case number and I walk up to the bench. He
keeps calling the Trooper's name with no avail. The guy did not show up for
court so the case was dismissed - but not without yet another tongue
lashing, this time from the Judge.
So - what is your Cop/Roadster story. I do have more and I know some
others from Idaho do to:)
