If it's an engine swap, you would have to get it certified by the california
air resources board referee station.

It has to be newer than the model of the car it is installed into.
It has to have all the emissions equipment applicable for that engine year.
It will have to pass the smog standards applicable for that engine year.
And Fergus may be right that the model may have to have been offered w/ a
V-8.
I'm not sure where to find the information to verify this, but their website
